Our own Jennifer Homeyer, founder and CEO of The Design House, was recently tapped as an expert source for a new Better Homes & Gardens feature on the patchwork-style tile backsplash trend. It is a nice nod to the design expertise our team brings to every kitchen remodel in Denton and across North Texas, and we wanted to share it with you.

What the Trend Is About

For years, plain white subway tile was the default backsplash choice in most kitchens. Now, homeowners are moving toward something more personal. Patchwork-style backsplashes mix different tile finishes, colors, and patterns on the same wall, creating a custom, collected look instead of one flat surface. According to the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s 2026 Kitchen Trends Report, the majority of designers now see backsplashes as an opportunity to make a real style statement rather than just a practical wall covering.

Jennifer’s Take

In the article, Jennifer explains that the appeal comes down to warmth and character after years of matching, all-white backsplashes. She also shared how to keep a patchwork design looking intentional rather than chaotic: lean on a controlled palette, whether that is soft off-whites, historical tones, or subtle geometric patterns, rather than stark, competing colors. Among her favorite materials for the look is zellige tile, prized for its handmade, “perfectly imperfect” variation from tile to tile.

She also weighed in on the practical side of installation, recommending high-fired porcelain or glazed ceramic over more porous, unglazed options, paired with a premium, stain-resistant grout that closely matches the tile so the design stays front and center.
